ABOUT US

Aventura Consciente educates families and professionals on strategies to understand and support autistic youth. We are the first bilingual initiative to provide tools to families and professionals in North and South Carolina.
All donations are tax deductible where allowed by law.

The prevalence in the United States is 1 in 31 children on the autism spectrum. The exponential growth of children diagnosed within the autism spectrum is increasing over the years. Many families lack the tools or knowledge to relate to the reality of autism, and are often unaware of the most respectful and kind way to relate to their children. Furthermore, the reality is that many families struggle to access professional, specialized support for their child’s autism, especially those from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. Autism radically changes the lives of families. To better coexist and improve the quality of life for the autistic person and their family, the most viable and sensible option is to access training that provides an up-to-date and rigorous perspective on what autism is and how to address the challenges of neurodivergent parenting from a positive and respectful perspective.

OUR WHY
Lucy came to the United States from Ecuador with a suitcase full of love and a heart full of hope. She was determined to build a wonderful family, and when her first son was born, her joy overflowed. She imagined a bright future for him—one full of laughter, love, and limitless possibilities. But everything changed when he was two years old. The doctors told her he is autistic. Lucy had never heard much about autism back in Ecuador. In that small, sterile room, she felt the walls close in. Fear, sadness, and confusion gripped her heart. She didn’t know what to expect—only that the path ahead seemed foggy and uncertain. She cried often, grieving the life she thought her son would have. She questioned herself, wondering if she had done something wrong. The weight of isolation was heavy, especially in a country far from home, where support felt distant and the language felt foreign. But one day, something shifted. Lucy decided that love was stronger than fear. She picked up books, listened to podcasts, attended workshops—anything she could find about autism. She began to understand autism, to see the beauty in a unique way of thinking and feeling. She learned to celebrate the small victories, like eye contact and shared smiles. Knowledge became her lantern in the dark. As she navigated motherhood, Lucy noticed how little people around her understood neurodiversity. Schools, doctors, even other parents often saw autism through a lens of outdated stereotypes. It broke her heart. So she took action. Lucy founded Aventura Consciente, a project born from pain, resilience, and deep love. Its mission was simple but powerful: to educate society about autism and other forms of neurodivergence—not with pity, but with respect and understanding. She wanted to break the chains of ignorance and build a world where kids like hers were seen, valued, and included. Through workshops, talks, and community events, Lucy created a safe space for parents, educators, and allies. She reminded them that knowledge is power—and with it, we can create a society where every mind is welcomed, not feared. Lucy’s journey was never easy. But through her grief, she found purpose. And through her purpose, she lit a path for others. Aventura Consciente is more than a project. It’s a movement. And it all began with a mother’s love.
